ESDNewsletter December 2006

Dear ESDN colleagues,

The first year of the ESDN Office comes to a close, and the 4th ESDN Newsletter informs you about our most recent work. Please choose among the following topics:

New ESDN Quarterly Report on the Finnish National Commission of SD (FNCSD) and the UK SD Commission (SDC)

The third ESDN Quarterly Report describes two distinct models of stakeholder involvement in the context of SD strategies. With the FNCSD it portrays one of the best known examples of a partnership model that subsumes government officials, business associations and civil society organisations in one organisation. With the UK SDC, it describes an independent ‘watchdog’ and stakeholder advisory body. For the full ESDN Quarterly Report on the two examples click here.

Expansion of the country profiles

The country profiles at the ESDN website provide a quick overview on some of the key features of SD strategy processes in 30 European countries. So far, the profiles have covered general information on SD strategies, mechanisms of horizontal and vertical integration, and about evaluation/reviewing and monitoring schemes applied across Europe.

Now the profiles also give a brief overview of National Councils of/for Sustainable Development across Europe.

In case you have additional information we can add to one of the profiles, please contact us by email (

Membership support is picking up: Norwegian Peer Review and Nordic Council of Ministers

A few weeks ago the ESDN Office was invited to the start-up meeting of the Norwegian Peer Review that took place in the peer country Sweden. We gave a presentation on “Mutual learning through Peer Reviews and the ESDN”. The presentation highlights possible points of contact between the two learning mechanisms. It can be viewed as pdf here.

In March 2007, the ESDN Office will also provide input to a workshop hosted by the Nordic Council of Ministers on the Nordic Strategy for SD.

SD events and initiatives

Preparations for the ESDN Conference 2007 are already under way. As announced by the German hosts at this year’s conference, “European Sustainability Berlin 07” will take place in Berlin on 3-5 June. We encourage all ESDN members and associated partners to save the date.

On 8-9 March 2007, OECD, UNDESA and UNESCAP will host a “Workshop on Developing Sustainability Strategies in Asia”. The draft agenda can be accessed here.

Please also take notice of “Mission Sustainability”, an international ideas competition that was recently launched by the German Council for SD.

For more SD related events and activities please go to the events section of the ESDN website. We have added links to two European event calendars.
